Many people ask me: “Is chiropractic safe for older people?” This always appears to me to be a somewhat unusual question.
I have been a practicing chiropractor for over 34 years so the issue of whether we treat someone purely based on their age is somewhat archaic and for me carries a naïve attitude about chiropractic care. It has always been my philosophy that if someone has a spine, muscular and/or nervous system then they are all candidates to be checked, assessed and (where no contraindications exist) treated with chiropractic care.
of course we modify our chiropractic treatments to allow for the changes in
body shape, composition and the age of the individual. However
the outcomes always remain the same: to increase joint movement, decrease
muscle tightness and improve the quality of life.
This is particularly important in the older members of society as due to arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia (chronic tight and stiff muscles) and just general wear and tear (which occurs simply through the aging process), the use of chiropractic treatment becomes even more important.
So when we have older clients come in with the despairing comments of “I have been told that I just have to live with it” or “they tell me I’m not 21 anymore”, then we simply sit them down and say that pain does not have to be a major part of your life as you age.
what are the chiropractic benefits for the aged members of our society?
chiropractic adjustments can help in the following area:
It can help in the
control of pain
can help to increase joint mobility
can help to decrease muscle tightness
It can help to increase
overall body function
overall effect of this is to assist in the ability of the client to both increase
their level of activity and to allow them to maintain their independence and
self worth for a longer period of time.
As part of their treatment regime they are also encourages to stretch and to exercise regularly. However this always comes with a warning: “make sure that the activities you perform are always within the realm of what your body is able to handle.”
are encouraged to do things in a gentle and deliberate manner with the end goal
being an increase in their ability to enjoy life to the fullest.
