Did you know that one of the most common injuries from a car crash is whiplash?
Whiplash occurs when the head and neck are thrown back and forth in a very forceful manner.
There are 2 Types of Whiplash:
is called a deceleration injury which
occurs when you hit an object (or motor car) in front of you causing the head
to first flex (bend) forward and then it goes backwards (extension).
second type of whiplash injury is called an acceleration injury and it is caused when you are hit from behind causing
your head first to go into extension and then into flexion.
Both injuries will cause damage to the muscles, ligaments and bone structures of the head, neck and thoracic (shoulder) area. Whiplash is not only caused by car crashes. It can be caused by any activity that forces the head and neck to “snap” back and forth e.g.: sneezing.
Studies have shown that even at low speeds (8kmh), car crashes can cause injury to the head, neck and shoulder area. Therefore, if you are in a relatively minor crash and your car is undamaged or has sustained minimal damage it does not necessarily mean that you didn’t.
A common myth associated with car crashes is “If I don’t have pain or discomfort right after the crash then I am alright”.
cannot be further from the truth as in some instances it may take several day
or weeks for the signs and symptoms to appear. Some of these signs of whiplash
include headaches, neck pain, restricted neck and shoulder movement, difficulty
in concentrating, irritability, ringing in the ears, blurred vison, difficulty
in swallowing and more.
very important point is that whiplash left unattended will change the mechanics
of the neck, which can lead in time to early neck degeneration and/or chronic
from whiplash injuries may also be felt through the shoulders, between the
shoulder blades or even into the arms. Numbness or tingling down the arm or
into the fingers may also be felt.
Indeed, anecdotal evidence shows that whiplash and similar injuries achieve the best outcomes when treated within the first 2 weeks of occurrence. The longer they are left unresolved the longer they will take to heal. So, the lesson here is that if you are in a crash get assessed as soon as possible whether you have pain or not.

of damage. A report is then presented to
the injured client in a very simple and understandable manner and following client
consent, chiropractic treatment to the damaged areas commences.
duration of the chiropractic care will be determined by the client’s recovery
time. Normally the benefits of chiropractic care will be seen quite early
although this will also depend on both the extent of the injuries and whether
the symptoms are chronic (long term).
