Are you suffering from severe and frequent headaches? A lot of people only associate chiropractic care with lower back pain. However chiropractic treatment can be used for so much more. One of the more common uses for chiropractic treatment is in the treatment of headaches.
Tension headaches are also known as chronic daily headaches or chronic non-progressive headaches. These headaches are the most common forms among adults and adolescents. These muscle contraction headaches cause mild to moderate pain and come and go over a prolonged period of time (hence the term “chronic headaches”).
Migraines produce throbbing pain over one or both sides of the head. Symptoms (beside pain) may include nausea, vomiting, light and noise sensitivity. Some sufferers have warnings before a migraine (called prodromal symptoms) such as visual disturbances. Migraine attacks may last from a few hours to several days and can occur with a variation of frequency.
The cluster headache is the least common but the most severe type of primary headaches. The pain of a cluster headache is intense and maybe described as having a burning or piecing quality that is throbbing or constant. The pain can be so severe that most cluster headache sufferers cannot sit still and will often pace during the attack. The pain is located behind the eye or in the eye region without changing sides. The term “cluster headache” refers to headaches that have a characteristic grouping of attacks. Cluster headaches can occur one to three times per day during the cluster period which may last several weeks to several months.
Sinus headaches are associated with a deep and constant pain in the cheekbone, forehead or the bridging of the nose. The pain usually intensifies with sudden head movements or straining and usually occurs with other sinus symptoms, such as nasal discharge, feeling of fullness in the ears, fever and facial swelling.
Headaches in women can sometimes be associated with changing hormone levels that occur during menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. Chemically induced hormone changes such as with birth control pills also trigger headaches in some women.
Chiropractors are skilled at assessing and evaluating the different types of headaches. Following an extensive case history, a physical examination is used to evaluate the cause of the presenting symptoms. A report is then presented to the headache suffering client in a simple to understand manner. Following the client’s consent, chiropractic treatment commences.
The duration of the chiropractic care will be determined by the client’s recovery time and the nature of the presenting headaches. Normally the benefits of chiropractic care will be seen quite early although this will also depend on both the type of headache and whether the symptoms are chronic (long term) or acute (short term).
