I have been a chiropractor for over 35 years and probably one of the most regular comments I hear is “once you go to a chiropractor you always have to go”.
Whenever I hear this statement my first reaction is that either the person making the statement has never been to a chiropractor or if they have been, then they have not understood the concept of chiropractic.
“Chiropractic (as defined by the World Federation of Chiropractic) is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health.”
Most people understand the value of chiropractic in treating spinal and pelvic disorders for musculoskeletal problems.
Many people also know that this outcome is achieved by manipulation.
A smaller portion also understand the chiropractic concept that spinal and pelvic manipulation allows the nervous system to function better resulting in better body performance.
Very few understand that to achieve this, regular chiropractic treatment is needed.
Most of us work on the belief that the only reason we go to a health practitioner is if we have pain.
Here is an interesting fact: do you realize that pain is the first thing to disappear when you have chiropractic treatment and the last thing to appear when you have a problem?
So, pain is not a good indicator if we are attempting to monitor our improvement and achieve optimal body performance and this is why going to the chiropractor shouldn’t be done as a last resort when in pain.
By maintaining regular visits you will ensure your body is working at its best and will reduce the chance of any potential injuries moving forward.
There is a better indicator than pain and that is correct body function.
Correct function, in this case, is defined by the ability of the body to work at the level it is designed to perform.
Biomechanically, this would include correct joint movement, adequate muscle and ligamentous strength and performance: all in the absence of pain.
Now in many cases to achieve this would be difficult as many variables would have to be considered including the age of the person, past injuries and the degree of personal fitness.
That is why the level of correct function is individually defined and hard to measure.
One thing is for certain and that is to achieve a high level of correct function you must work at it.
Some of the things you need to consider are:
Making sure that your body is supplied with the correct nutrition
Exercising within your capabilities
Getting enough good quality sleep
Resting to recover
Getting regular chiropractic treatment
So, the statement “once you go to a chiropractor you always have to go” only works true for those people who are wanting to get the best out of their bodies.
